Campaign 2011

The 33rd Gold Coast Airport Marathon

On the 3rd of July 2011, Amanda Lee-Ross, Manager of our service took part in the 33rd Gold Coast Airport Marathon. It was Amanda's second attempt at the 42 kilometre race and she set a 'personal best' time of 3:59:06 as well as raising $1,545 for the service too.

"I was so chuffed to complete the Gold Coast Marathon in 4 hours 15 minutes last year. The crowds were so supportive and the atmosphere was fantastic so I had no hesitation in doing it again" Amanda said.

After being inspired by Amanda last year, her husband, Darren, also took up the marathon challenge. They began training for the event back in early January, running four times a week beginning each one at the crack of dawn. "When it's dark and you're still tired from the training the day before, it really helps to have a supportive running partner, and that's what we did for each other" Amanda said. Unfortunately for Darren an achilles Heel injury sustained three weeks before the big day, put paid to his changes of attempting the race. "Darren was really disappointed to not be able to run, but is determined to try again next year" Amanda said.

The service supported Amanda's efforts by offering sponsors the chance to win a unique piece of art painted by the service's Child and Youth Counsellor and 'resident artist', Marta. The winner of painting was R. Field from Brisbane
